Peanut butter to lose weight

If you love peanut butter, here’s the good news:

Researchers at Purdue University tested various snack foods including unsalted peanuts, other nuts and rice cakes. They found that following a peanut or peanut butter snack, people’s hunger was reduced for two and a half hours. With other snacks hunger returned within half hour. Interestingly, the peanut snackers adjusted their calorie intake spontaneously and did not add extra calories to their daily diet. Furthermore there was a positive change in the fatty-acid profile of the diet reflecting the good-quality fats (monounsaturated) found in the peanuts.

Healthy eating habits for children

Do’s and Don’ts:

* Do set a good example for your child to follow. Have meals together and eat the same healthy foods.

* Do allow children to follow their natural appetites when deciding how much to eat.

* Do discourage snacking on sweets and fatty foods. Keep plenty of healthy foods such as fruits, raw vegetables, low fat crackers and yogurt for children to eat between meals.

* Do encourage children to enjoy fruits and vegetables by giving them a variety from an early age.

* Do ask children to help prepare meals. If parents rely mostly on fast foods, children may not learn to enjoy cooking.

* Don’t add unnecessary sugar to drinks and foods.

* Don’t force children to eat more than they want.

* Don’t give skim milk to children under the age of 5 unless your doctor prescribes it. At this stage children need the extra calories in whole milk.

* Don’t give whole nuts to children under the age of 5, who may choke on them but peanut butter is fine.

* Don’t use food as a bribe.

Eat right to age well

Here’s an interesting fact about longevity:

Japan has the longest life expectancy in the world. Yet people in the Okinawan Islands in southern Japan enjoy even longer and healthier lives than the average Japanese. Their diet secret? Lots of grains, vegetables, soy and fish; less meat, poultry and dairy. There is however, no scientific basis to the suggestion by some supplement manufacturers that ‘coral calcium’ is the secret of the Okinawans’ longevity.

So, pack your daily diet with nutritional high-value food:

* Cool-water fish such as salmon & tuna – contain Omega 3 fatty acids, which may reduce inflammation of the joints due to arthritis and degeneration of eyesight in older people.

* Beans – contain iron and a high value of protein.

* Dark green leafy vegetables – contain iron, folate, beta carotene and calcium.

* Fruits such as orange, guava or papaya – contain vitamin c, iron and fiber.

A daily tip:
Drink lots of water everyday – consume 6 to 8 glasses each day. It helps regulate body temperature, transports nutrients to your body cells and helps remove waste. Because sensitivity to thirst diminishes with age, older adults are susceptible to dehydration which can cause confusion, headache, fatigue and more.

How to go green at home

Quick tips on how to go green with your home:-

5. BBQ away
Use a gas-powered grill since natural gas burns clean and produces 45 percent less carbon dioxide compared to coal. It is also more earth friendly than charcoal and wood which produce soot that add to air pollution.

6. Spray it off
The next time you need to clean grease or paint off your hands, try some cooking spray. Spray it on hands, rub off grease or paint then wash with soap and water. It is easier and gentler than using paint solvent.
