Keep Looking Up – NBC

NBC is 5 today!

animated-birthday-cake

I can’t believe how quickly time has passed.  Today is exactly 5 years since I started blogging.  I was looking for a new hobby and thought it would be awesome to have an online journal.  A place where I can share my a little about my life, random stuff, quotes or humor with the world.
Blogging has also been a wonderful platform for me to express myself and share my deepest thoughts and wishes which are buried deep within. You know, some things in life are so mind-boggling.
Sydelle who was then only 6-year old suggested the name ‘New Bloggy Cat’ for my blog.  She adores cats and she even drew me this picture for my profile.

Two years later when she was 8, she drew another picture for me which still remained as my profile picture.

My two daughters have been and still are my biggest inspiration when it comes to blogging.  And Shaye, my 6-year old use to say ‘Blob’ instead of ‘Blog’ when she was younger. I loved the way she asked me, “Mom, are you going to post something on your blob? “

What I’ve learned these past 5 years is that…
…there are so many wonderful bloggers out there who are unbelievably talented when it comes to sharing their passion.
…it is okay to make grammar mistakes because it’s all part of the learning process.
…it does not matter how many people clicked the ‘like’ button on my post or how many are following my blog. It is not about the numbers but the passion for blogging.
…blogging does not have to be for monetary gain.  I once  suggested to a friend to start a blog and she said to me, “I will not do anything for free.”    But I believe she’s missing out on the priceless gift and joy of just blogging for fun.
…blogging is therapeutic and it makes me happy.  It keeps me going and growing.
Thank you all for being part of my wonderful blogging experience!

The surprise gift basket

gift basket

Just two days ago I wrote about the gift baskets I collected and I thought that’ll be all for my collection this year.
This afternoon,  I spotted this beautiful maroon basket across the street where I lived.  It’s a beautiful and sturdy looking gift basket.  Life is full of surprises!
I was feeling a bit under the weather today and I believe this gift basket carries with it a simple yet poignant message just for me:

The homeless man – NBC

homeless_man

The other day, I was walking behind this homeless man after getting a few things from the grocery store.

He’s most likely in his mid-thirties.  He seemed normal and healthy and in no way inadequate though his clothes looked old and worn out. He often carries a plastic bag with what looked like the few essential items he possessed.

I often see him loitering about the vicinity where I lived.  I wonder why he is homeless and if he had a family.  I’m sure he has a life story to tell like everyone else.

There were a few occasions I saw him sitting in the playground nearby writing in a notebook.  And he just kept on writing and writing.

Otherwise, he can be seen standing outside a 24-hour convenience store where he would place a plastic container for anyone who is willing to spare him some loose change. He seemed to have a kind of dignity and confidence in him that I could not explain, unlike most homeless persons I have met.  I am sure he knew who his regular supporters were. After all, this is a very small suburb.  And most long-time residents here respect and accept him for who he is.

Apart from that, he is self-sufficient and content to live his life this way.  Once, we happened to be both queueing to buy food from a food truck.  A four-wheel drive drove pass and stopped in front of us.  A middle-aged woman winds down her the car window and handed the homeless man a bag of Chinese takeaway food.  To my surprise, he told her in fluent Cantonese “No need, I have food today.”  But the woman was persistent and said twice, “Take it, I bought it for you.”  And again he told her no.  The lady then drove away bewildered by the rejection from this homeless man.

Here is a person who I guess had not eaten a decent meal in at least a few years and I cannot help to think how often we are guilty of overindulgent when it comes to food.

There were days we too may feel just like this homeless man – unloved, lonely and disconnected. The only difference is that we have a place we can go to, which we call home.

My prayer for everyone is may we never end up like this homeless man.  Life has its ups and downs and so often life seemed so unfair and our suffering unbearable.  But in those times may we be grateful to have a roof over our heads and food on the table.  And most of all to have our family or someone by our side, to love and to be loved cos at the end of the day love is all that matters.

Remembering Paul Curran

flowers9

A year ago, we received the sad and devastating news on the demise of our dear friend, Paul Curran.  Paul did not have his own blog and I had always looked forward to his weekly guest post over at Mark’s blog on Sundays.
If you want more of Paul’s stories, do hop over to CM’s blog where she has created a lovely space in memory of Paul.
Today I would like to pay tribute to our beloved Canadian friend – a master of words and storytelling who had touched our hearts and made a huge difference in our lives.

“Thank you Paul,
for sharing your beautiful stories.
Thank you for all your
thoughtful, wise and funny comments.
You were sincere, kind & understanding and
it was truly a joy and blessing knowing you.
May you rest in eternal peace and
rejoice with the angels above.”

Let’s start the race!

xb2020x2
I live in a country where
we are still defined by our race.
Some say,
it’s to preserve our own culture and heritage.
But I beg to differ as
over the years had caused much
discrimination and discord.
And those in authority are
killing our spirits
with their on-going rhetoric
for popularity and votes.
We need to see ourselves as
one nation, one human race.
Let us join our hearts together
to push for change
no matter how difficult
or long it may take
for the sake of our children
and future generations.
The time is now, my friends.
Let’s start the race today!

Rekindled – NBC

pretty-pink-heart-with-life-line-heartbeat-animated-gif

It was not love at first sight and
I’m not quite sure how it all started.
I remember I like you
more and more each passing day
being the dreamy girl that I was.
The kind of feeling
that was hard to explain.
I knew it was love and
that you felt the same way too.
Many said it was just infatuation,
I would forget you soon.
But why do I have the same strong emotion
deep within me still?
Perhaps we were too young then
to think about falling in love.
For the years ahead were uncertain,
our circumstances so different.
Many things we left unspoken and
we just drifted apart
like a message in a bottle
floating in the sea.
If I’m granted a wish today
I wish for an hour with you
to tell you how I felt
how much I loved you
how I had missed you.
And before I go
I will wish you well and
say goodbye.
