A civet cat in my attic – NBC

civet cat=1.jpg

Of late, we heard some strange noises in the attic.  Over the past two years, our attic has become a birthing center for mother cats.  Hubby had even bought a cat trap so we could catch the mother cats and take them to the animal shelter.
The strange noises were quite irritating.  My daughters thought the noises were really spooky and find it too early still to celebrate Halloween. So, hubby climbed up the attic to have a look. It was quite dark up in the attic and with the flashlight, he saw something that looks like a cat. But then, he said it could be a “Musang” (commonly used term for civet cat).
He set the cat trap as how he normally does.  And last night, we heard a loud ‘trap’ sound. And lo and behold, that’s indeed a Musang!.  It looks rather catlike in appearance and it has a thickly furred long tail, small ears, and a pointed snout.
This is also the animal that produces the most expensive coffee in the world.  In Indonesia these animals are known as “Luwaks“. If you have been to Indonesia,  I’m sure you have heard of “Kopi Luwak“.  It is also called cat poop coffee.  This coffee is said to have been produced from the coffee beans which have been digested by the Luwak or civet cat.  The price for a single cup of Kopi Luwak runs $35 to $80 and a one-pound bag of beans costs $100 to $600.
I have not tried this famous poop coffee because I am not willing to spend $35 or more for a cup of coffee. And I don’t think I would ever try it after reading the article in the national geographic.
This morning hubby called the Wildlife Department to come rescue this Musang.  It’s a protected species and we better not think of keeping it as a pet or to use it to produce poop coffee, because should the authorities find out we could be slapped with a fine of up to $10,000.
So, farewell Musang friend.  It was a pleasure meeting you!

Remembering Paul Curran

flowers9

A year ago, we received the sad and devastating news on the demise of our dear friend, Paul Curran.  Paul did not have his own blog and I had always looked forward to his weekly guest post over at Mark’s blog on Sundays.
If you want more of Paul’s stories, do hop over to CM’s blog where she has created a lovely space in memory of Paul.
Today I would like to pay tribute to our beloved Canadian friend – a master of words and storytelling who had touched our hearts and made a huge difference in our lives.

Let’s start the race!

xb2020x2
I live in a country where
we are still defined by our race.
Some say,
it’s to preserve our own culture and heritage.
But I beg to differ as
over the years had caused much
discrimination and discord.
And those in authority are
killing our spirits
with their on-going rhetoric
for popularity and votes.
We need to see ourselves as
one nation, one human race.
Let us join our hearts together
to push for change
no matter how difficult
or long it may take
for the sake of our children
and future generations.
The time is now, my friends.
Let’s start the race today!

Why, Lord? – NBC

prayer3
“Why, Lord?” I cried
when I heard about the massacre
in Las Vegas that night.
I recall the last such incident
that I prayed and wished
it would be the last.
Why did this lone gunman kill
all those innocent people?
Was it because of too much hatred
and lack of love?
Was he distraught, brainwashed
or think he can play God?
But who am I to question you, Lord.
For your thoughts are not my thoughts.
I pray that you’ll comfort
the families that are grieving,
those who got hurt and need speedy healing.
I plead for you to stir and awaken
the hearts of those in power
to make it a little harder for
 a reckless man like him
to gun down people.
May we who feel so powerless
continue to stand strong in unity
and do our small part
to make this world a safer
and better place to live.

The Gentle Monster – NBC

monster-1.jpg

A special dog like you would only
come along once in our lifetime.
And the name Monster suited well
for you were born a mischief-maker.
Remember all the furniture you destroyed and
dad’s new Ericsson phone you nibbled.
Did you try to call your girlfriend
and got upset with the not so
paw-friendly phone buttons?
Also the curtains you pulled down
together with the rod
the two bags of soil you ripped
and painted the front porch mud brown
and did not miss a spot.
You chewed every pair of
high-heel shoes that I bought.
Were you confused and thought
you must try to heel your sole
for all the trouble you caused?
But we could never really be angry with you
after all you were just
a monster with a gentle soul.
You adored and babysat
Sydelle and Shaye when they were younger
you were so smart you even
played hide and seek together
and your love for soccer was like no other.
You guarded the oven patiently and
waited  for the roast lamb to be cooked.
You enjoyed your weekly spa moment
when dad gave you a shower.
Sadly though, three years ago today
you knew your end was near and
so very hard for us to let you go.
When I was out with the girls that evening
dad fed you your favourite meal
you spent some private moment
as he held you gently in his arms until
you were ready CT to say your final goodbye.
Three years on and
we love and miss you still, Monster.

Rekindled – NBC

pretty-pink-heart-with-life-line-heartbeat-animated-gif

It was not love at first sight and
I’m not quite sure how it all started.
I remember I like you
more and more each passing day
being the dreamy girl that I was.
The kind of feeling
that was hard to explain.
I knew it was love and
that you felt the same way too.
Many said it was just infatuation,
I would forget you soon.
But why do I have the same strong emotion
deep within me still?
Perhaps we were too young then
to think about falling in love.
For the years ahead were uncertain,
our circumstances so different.
Many things we left unspoken and
we just drifted apart
like a message in a bottle
floating in the sea.
If I’m granted a wish today
I wish for an hour with you
to tell you how I felt
how much I loved you
how I had missed you.
And before I go
I will wish you well and
say goodbye.
